Our Erik, where shall I begin. There were several reasons why I wanted an own tomcat.
My tomcat had to meet a number of requirements. He had to:

  • please us all
  • be good looking
  • have a good and kind character
  • be black silver of colour
  • have a beautiful full fleece
  • have other pedigree lines than my female cats
  • have parents who have been tested as much as possible
  • no hereditary deviations (as far as you can know at that moment)
  • become a nice large tomcat
  • be sold with permission to use for breeding

After a long search on the Internet, and a lot of e-mails and phone calls later, we found Erik. After collecting all information from both sides, Erik seemed to meet our requirements. We hadn't yet seen him face to face . Therefore we couldn't know for sure if everything was really truth. That was something that I found nerve wrecking. It would be our first time, that we would buy an animal abroad!

On 13 April 2008 we have agreed with Iva (his breeder) that we would buy Erik. We set the date that I could pick up Erik. But first he had to get his Rabies vaccination. And in the Czech Republic you have to wait four weeks before you can travel to the abroad. Unfortunately was the day that we could obtain Erik, on the same day as the birthday of our daughter, therefore we set the date to obtain Erik one week later (on 24 May).

After the flight with Erik to my feet, he was at last at our home. He immediately got acquainted with Hopsa, and that went very good. With Jo-Jo it took a bit more time to build a bond. The dogs were new for Erik, so that he had to get used to them. Meanwhile they go along very well with each other.

We are totaly in love with him, he is super sweet and social, he is beautiful, grows super and he has found his place already in our family. If he is 1 year old he is tested on HCM, PKD, FeLV, FIV and Patella luxatie. If all results are negative, he can try to put beautiful, kind and cute baby kittens on this world.

Meanwhile Erik proved to be a good father from beautiful and very social kittens.

An update :-(

With deep sadness we had to decide to euthanize our Erik.
Erik has had problems with the right side of his nose for about six months long. After several examinations and treatment, it was during the endoscopy that they found a poplar seed in his right nostril, and a big clot of snot behind. Glad to have found the cause, we are going to treat the inflammation that remained after cleaning the nostril/nasal passage.

But Erik responded temporarily to the treatment and after a while the symptoms came back. After further treatments, examinations, consultations with specialists, etc. we ended at the MDC in Amsterdam. There he got his last (thirth on in total) endoscopy and he got the terrible diagnosis malignant lymphoma. A biopsy confirmed what was seen with the endoscopy.

What probably happened is that due to the prolonged inflammation in Erik's nose (due to the seed that was stuck there), there arised faulty cells, who became the basis for the tumor.
Since Erik was already treated with a long time with prednisone, the chance Chemo therapy would work was even smaller. Erik's health deteriorated in the last two weeks so quick, we decided, in consultation with our vet, it was time to let Erik go, so he no longer had to fight. Rest in peace, sweet friend.

Erik himself is not here anymore. We mis him a lot. We are glad we can cherish him not only by memories, but also with some offspring of him, in first, second and third generation at this moment.
